Video Surveillance for Pet Safety and Monitoring

Topic: Pet Safety and Monitoring

Anyone who has ever owned a pet knows just how precious and valuable they are. They are more than just animals you keep around the house; they are a part of your family. Recent surveys have showed that over 71.1 million households in the United States have pets in the home, be they cats, dogs, goldfish, ferrets, rabbits, iguanas or any number of other household pets. If you're concerned about the safety of your pet, video surveillance can be an excellent solution to keep them safe and preserve your peace of mind.

Beneficial Aspects of Video Surveillance for Pets

As much as we love our pets, we can't keep our eyes on them all the time. Through the use of video surveillance, however, we can keep tabs on them even while we are out of the house, whether we be shopping, at the office or just out on the town. IP network cameras can send video feeds which are viewable from any computer with a network connection, even cell phones!

Using video surveillance allows you to know where your pet is at any time. Know when they are going into areas they aren't supposed to be. If they are getting into areas with valuable and/or fragile items, you can be alerted and be able to take action. Should a pet manage to get out or get lost, your cameras will let you know immediately so you can find them and bring them back home.

Another added benefit is keeping track of special moments. Pets do all sorts of precious and adorable things, and through video monitoring we can keep a record of all these wonderful activities, even if we aren't around to see it first hand. Beyond safety, this is another wonderful benefit of video surveillance for pets.

Concerns of Video Surveillance for Pets

Pets are wonderful things, but they can sometimes get into trouble and into places and things they aren't supposed to. When placing cameras for surveying pets, make sure you keep them off the ground or areas your pet can reach. This will protect your cameras from any damage your pets might cause should they be able to get their little paws on them.

If you are going to be monitoring an outdoor pet, you should also make sure that your camera is able to cope with the harsher outdoor conditions. Water resistance, ability to cope with changes in humidity and temperature, etc. are all important things in an outdoor camera. You can also use a protective enclosure for your camera to help keep it safe for outdoor monitoring.

IP Network Cameras and Pet Surveillance

Video surveillance technology has made great strides in recent years and new advancements are developing all the time. Because of their use of digital camera technology, IP network cameras in particular have become much more powerful. Much of this advanced technology can be used to great effect for pet surveillance.

Placing and Configuring IP Network Cameras for Pets

When placing cameras for pet monitoring, you should make sure to place cameras in all of the places that your pet frequents. With IP network technology, you can set up your cameras to turn off and on as pets enter and leave a room. You can also use motion detection triggers, so that your camera will only be on while the animal is active.

For pets enclosed in cases or cages, make sure that your camera is placed to take in as much of the enclosure as possible. Light reflection and glare can also be major concerns with glass enclosures, so watch out for this when placing your camera.
